In Foil Surfing, the surface you actually stand on, the board, is completely above the water. The foil lifts the board above the surface by a whole foot or more. People describe the sensation of foil surfing as if they're actually flying along the ocean.

Foil surfing is an exciting experience, and it may not require waves to get going. Hydrofoil surfing is somewhat like controlled aquaplaning. If you aren't using waves to get you started you will need a tow vehicle or a way to generate speed, such as a boat or a jet ski, as hydrofoil surfing requires more speed than traditional surfing.

With calm waters and thermal wind, an inland lake is also a great way to learn to wing foil, as it can help reduce the amount of time you need to become comfortable with the foil board and inflatable wing.
